stall
So many prizes you can hardly see Maz peeping over!

As we had some travelling to do both myself & Maz were up at 4AM to make sure we got there in time for the event.  It was quite a journey as we had to carry all our prizes for this years push-up contest to the event by train, we had several changes & a trip across London just to add to the excitement!

After quite a few hours & one slight loss of direction we were at our destination, the Civic hall in Wolverhampton & set up shop.

Is Maz getting a slap round the face here?

Give aways & try outs

Natures Whey
Ashley from Natures Whey with the new Ignite Ultra V all-in-one

This year we had a new feature on the stall.  We were lucky enough to have the guys from Natures Whey on the stall & they were launching their new all-in-one powder on the stall.  The product called 'Ignite Ultra V' isn't available anywhere yet, the only place to get it was coming to our stall & getting a tub, as it only goes on general release on the 2nd November nearly a week after this event!  With pea protein, creatine, beta alanine, glutamine, macca & leucine in it, the powder was a pretty potent sounding product. I was lucky enough to get a chance to try all the flavours myself, I must admit I liked them all!  You could not only buy a tub, but try the shake on the stall & also take home free sample packs if you still weren't sure.  In the end around 200 samples had been given out, many shakes tasted & many tubs sold after the first taste!

vitashine
A couple of squirts & this guy has all the vitamin D he needs!

That wasn't all, the nice people over at Vitashine had not only given us 10 prizes for the men & women entering, but also given us some of their vitamin D3 spray for people to test out & see if they like it.  Just for the record it has a very slight taste of oil that lasts about a second if you spray it into your mouth directly, spraying it on food means you won't taste it at all.  Before you ask yes it is vitamin D3 & yes it is vegan, not from sheep like all other vitamin D3 I've found in the UK is, so it is ok for us to use.

Let's find a better magazine name

We also gave some room on the stall to Knut, the ex-editor of the ever popular Vegan Views magazine for his new project.  Now bear in mind Knut comes from Norway, but he named his new magazine "The semi-vegan"!  Now before you send an email off to me complaining, it's him that named it & yes it is awful!  The magazine itself follows a similar format to vegan views, but one article did have honey in it (as one person said - "Why not use golden syrup?").  Anyway you can download a pdf of the magazine here or if you're a scribd fan get it here.

I think you, being much brighter than Knut, should be able to come up with a better name than "The Semi-Vegan", so I'll set you a challenge! Send Knut a new magazine name to  knut.caspari@gmail.com with the subject title "A better name for your magazine" & if he picks that name you will win a DVD I will send you & any other goodies we can find.  This is open to anyone in any country, help out poor old Knut, get his magazine a decent title.

So what are you waiting for, get your thinking caps on & win some goodies!

Talks

We had two talks by members of Vegan Bodybuilding both myself & Pat Reeves (World Record Holding Powerlifter & nutritional expert) gave talks on the day so there was no shortage of things to listen to during the day as each talk was about an hour.  In my talk I badly overran & didn't even get to cover nutrition, but I suspect Pat did an excellent job on that issue in her talk, so hopefully we got all the bases covered with that one?

Meeting strongmen

We had quite few strong people coming to the stall during the event.  Joni, a guy I've known for ages, had some really good news, in this years under 105Kg England's Strongest Man contest he'd come a very respectable 10th place & done equally well at the Finland's Strongest Man under 105Kg class.  Joni fought his way up for a guy who was 60Kg soaking wet to a top 10 under 105Kg competitor, all it took was a vegan diet & a LOT of heavy lifting! So, yes you can get both big & strong on a vegan diet as all Joni's muscle was gained while on a vegan diet.  Well done mate!

Joni
Joni may be one of the strongest under 105's in the UK,
but even he couldn't resist the power of Ignite Ultra V

We also met up with the popular bodybuilder Anthony Mann, who has promised us an article for the site for a while now (get to it Anthony)...no pictures here, but he does appear again later in our adventure!

Of course the strongest guy in the whole event was obvious to everyone.  Even Joni & Anthony had to bow to the power of this young muscle man

Strongest guy in the whole event?  Probably!

Push-up contest

Finally it was 4 O'clock the doors were locked, the security stood by & it was time to start the push-up contest.  We had a massive crowd crammed into the foyer for this years event.  With Pat Reeves judging, 7 women & 10 men we knew we were in for an exciting contest.  This year was extra special as being fed up with women always doing push-up on their knees we now introduced the option of doing full push-ups for the ladies, with each full push-up being worth 4 push-ups on the knees, so we were very excited to get going.

Sponsors

This year we had some really awesome prizes.  The winners took home the better part of £200 worth of prizes each, while second & third got more than previous winners have got at our events!  We tried very hard to make sure the main sponsors got a high profile.  They did a grand job of supporting us, so if you are after anything they offer then I suggest you at least check them out as these are all companies we at vegan bodybuilder actually use, I only bothered to approach companies I thought would be of interest to our members so by supporting them you can support us, as without their help giving us all this free stuff you wouldn't get the prizes at the contest.

our main sponsors this year were:

Women's contest

As I said this year we introduced the option of women doing full push-ups.  We had been trying to think of a way to move the ladies towards the using full push-ups at the contests.  Note ladies that ALL the top 3 won doing full push-ups, not on the knees.  Obviously all strength levels are welcome, but if you are looking for a podium place I'd start working towards getting a full push-up mastered by our next year as this format is the new way we'll be doing it from now on!

Maya got a great 31 reps on the knees

Cauli got 13 FULL reps - the first female to do full reps in contest :-)

Dennie got most (obviously the strongest female in the contest!)

Helen got an amazing 20 full reps

Elizabeth got a great  9 full reps

Izzy got a tough fought 30 on the knees (second strongest lady I reckon)

Finally came Tee who pushed out 27 Full reps & then 3 on the knees to finish!

Men's contest

This was the second year & the defending champion was here to see if he could hold onto the title of the vegan push-up king of the Midlands.

Sam did a massive 48 reps to start things off with a bang

Anthony the local muscle man cranked out 56 reps

Dan got a respectable 35 reps

Bill got a useful 25 reps

Graeme got 34 hard won reps

While Graham got a tough 29 reps

Jamie worked hard to get 49 reps

Dave crushed 44 reps

Ian got a respectable 34 reps

Darwin got 1 rep, but the weight of the scarf held him back
otherwise it would have been 101 (so he said)

Winners

So for the ladies in third we had Cauli

For the men we had Sam

In 2nd place for the ladies we had Helen

For the guys it was Jamie

& in 1st place for the ladies was ever-fit Tee

& for the boys it was the big man himself Anthony

Thanks to everyone for entering & supporting the event if not for you we'd have to take home & keep all the prizes ourselves...um, that actually doesn't sound so bad!

But of course everyone is a winner when they enter one of our events

A wee bit of controversy

Just after we got over patting ourselves on the backs for actually avoiding controversy in this event I noticed we actually gave third place prizes to Jamie & second place prizes to Sam...I blame Coach Gary for not being there to check the result as there is never a controversy when he comes along :-) (check older events to see how true that is!).  Still everyone got more than enough to keep them happy I hope.

Finally

That was just about the end of our day.  We had to pack up & rush for our train home, we had a nice stroll back to the station with Pat who was also rushing off as she had to get to Bournemouth to judge a powerlifting contest the next day.

So I'll put the list of sponsors again, this time with some tastefully added pictures of the contestants added to keep it a little bit more exciting, but as I said really do try & check them out.  All the main sponsors as our regular members really do use their products as the best they've found out there & the other sponsors are there on the day at vegan events supporting the growth of our lifestyle, so go check them out & you'll be getting decent products & helping us grow a little bit stronger (oh yea & get out there find an exercise you like & start training today!)
